What Does City Council Do?

How does City government affect you?

If you don't know what City Council members do, you are among friends. Many citizens do not get deeply involved in local politics because they are busy living their lives and if they don't see a direct negative affect in their lives they would prefer to stay out of the mix. Below is a list of functions that City Council performs on a regular basis, and what you are electing someone to do when you vote this September.

Responsibilities of City Council

  • Review and approve the annual budget
  • Establish long- and short-term objectives and priorities
  • Oversee performance of the local public employees
  • Oversee effectiveness of programs
  • Establish tax rates
  • Enter into legal contracts
  • Borrow funds
  • Pass ordinances and resolutions
  • Modify the city’s charter
  • Regulate land use through zoning laws
  • Regulate business activity through licensing and regulations
  • Regulate public health and safety
  • Exercise the power of eminent domain
  • Communicate policies and programs to residents
  • Respond to constituent needs and complaints
  • Represent the community to other levels of government
